The Journey Begins Now

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

Welcome and here we go!

You may have stumbled across this site by accident, sent as a link by yours truly, or as a recommendation from a friend. However means you may have gotten here thank you for taking a little time out of your day to take a gander at the site and maybe read on a bit.

I know what you may be thinking – “Great not another blog site to spend time reading.” I do not want to presume you have even read anything past this point, and I don’t blame you if that was your reaction. I thought long and hard and came up with reasons why not to start a blog site. One reason is it just might be passé, and the market for blog sites is oversaturated, which I am sure it most likely is. The other reasons for not doing it is that I was concerned about taking up your time to read what I’ve written, or you just may not be interested in what I have to say at all.

Well I have a few responses.

  1. Starting a site like this takes very little effort and investment and I have written down quite a lot of words that are just sitting idly on my computer, and I would rather put them to use. Now whether or not the words that are united into sentences and happen to convey a collection of ideas that you may or may not relate to remains to be seen.
  • Concerning taking up your precious time, I have decided to keep each posting short (1-minute read tops, except for this one, I promise) because I know that there are so many things in life these days that are vying for your attention, and it would be both selfish and presumptuous to assume you might even be interested in reading anything more than that. Besides, I am going by the expression “Always leave them wanting more.”

It is my hope that you will want more after this, which is why I will continue to post once a week. I know that some people are drawn to certain writer’s voices, ideas and ways of perceiving the world and maybe this is one of those.

I am keeping the concept very simple and will post writings that I have done for over two years. In fact, truth be told, these are all warm up writings I did for 20-30 minutes before I started writing my book each day, something I have also coincidentally done for the last two plus years. What you will see are weekly posts and an accompanying photo that was shot by a very good friend of mine. If you care to know the process here it is – Prior to posting I will send the writing for that week to my photographer friend who in turn will read what I have written and based on inspiration choose a photo to accompany the writing. Then I will simply upload both. This will be done weekly, unless over time there is a desire from readers to want more, in which I will happily oblige. However, I do not want to overwhelm you, as again I know time is precious and fleeting.

Now I do not want to mislead you so there is one more thing I would like to say, and that is as you see from the URL, name and description of the blog site there are references to Japan. This is not a site about comparing the differences between the US and Japan or idiosyncrasies and funny stories about life in Japan, this will be for another form in the future. Stay tuned for that. This is more about having been inspired by living in Japan. I have found that living here for over 12 years in such a culturally rich and different place from where I was raised, and that on some level I have had the opportunity to realize and in some cases confront both the personal and cultural stories I have held on to. Some of what you may read is about my having gone through the process of letting go and being on the other side, others are just observations and in some cases what feels like a daily journal. In short, what I have found is that I can take on the parts of my culture and the culture in which I am living and find a balance between both. Yes this is somewhat vague and esoteric, but I promise if you read on in the coming weeks, months or dear GOD years, you may get a better understanding of just what it is I am talking about.

Well, if you have read up to this point, thank you for your time and do hope you stick around and enjoy. And if you really like it, feel free to pass it on to others and follow by clicking “follow” at the bottom right hand of the page and if you are so inclined by inspiration to comment feel free to do that as well.

EDIT #1: It has been suggested to add more content for viewers to read. So for the first few days I will be adding a few pages of content then will back off and add content weekly after that. Stay tuned!

EDIT #2: After further thought and consultation, I will be posting items twice weekly because it seems the more new content is added the more chance people will be interested and follow the blog site.

And as an added bonus even though it is not quite complete, I have decided from time to time to add teaser paragraphs from my book of the same blog site name “Tales from the land down under the rising sun.” about life in Japan. Think Seinfeld meets Garrison Keillor and by some miracle out pops a love child. So if you want to get a taste of the book, why not “follow” me and get notified every time I post.
